Her Story: Soledad Chacon

Soledad Chavez de Chacon (1890-1936), political Pioneer and trailblazer. Chacon was the first woman elected to be the Secretary of State of New Mexico in 1922. This was two years after the 19th Amendment guaranteed women the right to vote. This election victory also made her the first Hispanic woman elected to statewide office in the United States.
