First woman on color to win a Pulitzer Prize

Her Story: Alice Walker

On This Day in Women’s History, Alice Walker Becomes the First African-American to Win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, April 18, 1983. Just ten days later, her novel The Color Purple, also won the National Book Award for fiction.
