Dr. Myra Adele Logan (1908 to 1977), was a Black surgeon and the first woman in the world to perform open heart surgery in 1943. She was also and the first African-American woman elected a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She was a pioneering doctor known for her skills and humanitarianism.
While Dr. Logan was extremely dedicated to practicing medicine, She also believed strongly in addressing the needs of her community through volunteerism. She work with the NAACP, Planned Parenthood, the New York State Fair Employment Practices Committee and many other organizations.
Dr. Myra Adele Logan was known for encouraging people to walk tall and proud, and be who they want to be. We honor her for breaking ground in the medical field and setting a path for other women to follow.
