Her Story: Gail Fisher

Gail Fisher was the first black person to have speaking lines in a nationally televised commercial appearing in an advertisement for All laundry detergent in the early 1960s. She was one of the first black women to get substantive roles on television and was primarily known for playing “Peggy Fair” in the popular television show Mannix from 1968 through 1975.

Fisher became the first African American woman to win an Emmy Award in 1970 for an Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Drama for her work in Mannix.  In 1971 Fisher became the first African American woman to win a Golden Globe, and in 1973 Fisher won her second Golden Globe.
