Toni Morrison (February 18, 1931 – August 5, 2019) was an American novelist, essayist, editor, teacher and professor emeritus at Princeton University. Among her best- known novels are The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon, and Beloved.

Morrison won a Pulitzer Prize for her critically acclaimed novel, Beloved,  in 1988. She Became the first Black woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993. In addition to honorary degrees and a multitude of literary awards for her work, in 2012 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of freedom
